THE CHEKING PROCESS – Psychiatric services have been in increasing demand in recent weeks. Should we fear a “third wave” linked to psychological or even psychiatric disorders?
THE QUESTION. At the last count of Public Health France in early November, 21% of French people had a depressive state expressed by sadness, gloomy thoughts, difficulty concentrating or sleeping. A proportion which has almost doubled compared to the 11% recorded at the end of September. Anxiety disorders, which manifest as constant fear and without a specific focus, have also increased by three points since the end of August.

The upward trend is such that the Minister of Health Olivier Véran was moved on November 18 by the possibility of a “third wave, which would be a wave of mental health for young and old“. How do we explain this sudden rise in psychiatric pathologies? Have any vulnerability factors been identified?
