Mexico Girls Wrestling Returns Experienced Star Power to Pair With Young Talent

Mexico Girls Wrestling Looks to Make Another Run at State With Blend of Experience and Fresh Talent

The Mexico girls wrestling program is hoping past success can translate to another strong season, despite having a roster full of both familiar and new faces.

Building on Past Success

The Lady Bulldogs are ready to build on a successful season. Alexus Johns is returning after becoming the program’s first-ever state finalist last season, while Abby Bowen also returns as a state qualifier.

Head coach Tony Senor said his roster is “slim on the lighter weights,” with a lot of new wrestlers unsure of their weight class. “I know differently initially we’re going into the season thought,” stated Senor, “it’s kind of needing to be formed. Returning is Lilly Debo. She could be at 100 or 105. Returning is Alyssa Knight at either 130 or 135. Abby Bowen, confidently, voter feet; Khrushchev at heavyweight. Marali Herrera is a newcomer I think she’ll be at 135 or 140 or the returned.
Those are her mainstays, they’ll likely start, but then, in the lighter weights, it’s a lot of waiting for girls who are either brand new or only wrestled fresh or sophomores, until, you know, some little figures,” Senor sat wait and see what happens.

Quick Learners, Quick Strategies

Senor’s biggest praise for this year’s new wrestlers is how quickly they are picking things up, “The answers.” “That’s what we know to see, she’s not spending a whole lot of time on fundamentals but moving forward.

Senor acknowledges the learning curve and expressed hopes to qualify three wrestlers for state again. “I think that’s a real intent. We’ve done it before,” said Senor.

He predicts Johns could be a state champion, or at least involved in medal ceremonies. He also believes this is Bowen’s year to earn her first state

medal,” He added, we ran these, who were in medical school last season, we’ve added competition like the

Battle on the Katy Trail and Wonder Woman tournaments again this season,” Senor details valuable experience and tough competition early on, saying, “loaded fields.” “…a mini state…” Senor said, highlighting, the fus,”

Talking about Brookfields, the preview Senora that box everything together for showcasing their skills, Senori remarked, “One of our own Home Meets we have scheduled

includes a dual against Brookfield. And demonstrably they’re slated to be the state champion.”

The Lady Bulldogs may not have the numbers, but they definitely know the feeling of comp.

### Leadership On and Off the Mat

While Senor is excited about the on-the-mat potential, he knows finding leadership within the young squad is crucial.

Senior mentioned Matty Tolbert as an invaluable leader. She returned last season from injury and is the lone senior on the roster, bringing vital experience to the team. “I need leaders on my team to help guide girlsIt’s not always going to be the state tournament. It’s also growing the sport in Mexico.”

“There’s a reason she is student council president,” Senor added.Arggh
