Manila, Philippines – A chartered flight is set to bring 341 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) home from the Middle East on Saturday, March 14, 2026, as tensions continue to rise in the region. The repatriation effort, spearheaded by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), aims to provide safe passage for distressed and stranded Filipinos from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain.
The move comes as the Philippine government responds to growing concerns for the safety of its citizens working abroad. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is coordinating with Philippine embassies in Riyadh, Manama, and Kuwait to facilitate the return of OFWs who wish to avail of repatriation assistance. This large-scale operation underscores the government’s commitment to protecting Filipino workers in vulnerable situations, particularly during periods of international instability.
According to OWWA, the chartered flight will depart from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on March 14, 2026, and is expected to arrive at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in the Philippines on March 15, 2026. The agency is providing comprehensive assistance to the returning OFWs, including help with travel documentation, temporary accommodation, and transportation support. The entire operation is funded through the Emergency Repatriation Fund administered by OWWA, ensuring a smooth and orderly return for those affected by the escalating situation in the Middle East.
Coordinated Effort to Bring OFWs Home
The repatriation process involves a complex logistical operation, particularly for OFWs in Bahrain. Teams from OWWA, the DMW, and the Philippine Embassies in Riyadh and Manama are assisting workers in crossing land borders to reach Riyadh, where they will board the flight. Similarly, OFWs in Kuwait are receiving support from government teams processing travel clearances and coordinating land border crossings to reach the staging area in Riyadh. This coordinated approach highlights the “whole-of-government” strategy being employed to prioritize the safety of Filipinos overseas.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Directed OWWA to arrange the charter flight to assist Filipinos wishing to return from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain, recognizing the increasing anxieties surrounding the regional tensions. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is also playing a crucial role, working alongside Philippine embassies to identify and assist OFWs in need of repatriation.
Welfare Assistance Provided to Returning Workers
Beyond transportation, the government is providing various forms of welfare assistance to the returning OFWs. This includes support with essential travel documentation, temporary lodging although awaiting departure, and transportation to the airport. The primary objective, according to OWWA, is to ensure the safety and well-being of these workers and reunite them with their families in the Philippines. The agency has also indicated that additional charter flights are being arranged to accommodate other distressed OFWs or those who proactively choose to return from affected areas.
The number of OFWs seeking repatriation has been steadily increasing. Recently, over 300 distressed OFWs are preparing to return, and 1,189 OFWs have sought repatriation amid the ongoing tensions, according to OWWA.
The repatriation of these 341 OFWs represents a significant step in ensuring the safety and well-being of Filipinos working in the Middle East. The government continues to monitor the situation closely and is prepared to provide further assistance as needed.
As the situation in the Middle East remains fluid, the Philippine government will likely continue to assess the need for additional repatriation flights and support services for OFWs in the region. Stay informed about updates and advisories from the DMW and Philippine embassies.
