Mikati condemns the targeting of a UNIFIL vehicle in southern Lebanon

Lebanon – Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned, yesterday, Saturday, the targeting of a vehicle for the United Nations peacekeeping forces in Lebanon, “UNIFIL,” which resulted in 4 wounded.

This came in a telephone call made by Mikati with General Aroldo Lazaro, Commander-in-Chief of UNIFIL forces operating in the south, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.

The statement said, “Mikati expressed his solidarity with the international forces following the targeting of a UNIFIL vehicle, which led to a number of injuries. He also expressed his condemnation of this serious incident.”

General Lazaro informed Mikati that UNIFIL is conducting investigations into the incident to uncover its circumstances, according to the same statement.

Earlier on Saturday, UNIFIL announced in a statement that it had opened an investigation into an explosion that occurred in southern Lebanon, which led to the injury of three of its observers and a translator.

While the official Lebanese News Agency said that an Israeli raid targeted the UNIFIL vehicle, the Israeli army claimed, through its spokesman, Avichay Adraee, that no vehicle of the UN forces was targeted in southern Lebanon.

The Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in turn, condemned the targeting of a vehicle for the United Nations peacekeeping forces in Lebanon, “UNIFIL.”
