The possibility of seeing Luke Cage back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains open, according to actor Mike Colter. While Krysten Ritter is set to reprise her role as Jessica Jones in the upcoming second season of “Daredevil: Born Again,” fans are still wondering if other former Netflix Marvel heroes will make appearances. Colter, who famously portrayed Luke Cage in the now-canceled Netflix series, recently shared an update on his ongoing conversations with Marvel Studios.
Colter’s comments come as speculation mounts about potential cameos from characters like Luke Cage and Danny Rand (Finn Jones) during filming of “Daredevil: Born Again.” Both actors were reportedly in New York City during production, fueling rumors among fans. However, a confirmed return remains uncertain.
Speaking at Fan Expo Vancouver, Colter addressed the possibility, stating, “Look, I mean, here’s the thing: I have been talking to Marvel, and Jessica [Jones]’ back, and there’s a lot of story left to tell, and I just suppose that it’d be a shame for me not to pop back up.” This suggests that discussions are still underway and that Colter is enthusiastic about revisiting the role of Luke Cage, a character that resonated deeply with audiences during his time on Netflix.
Beyond the Marvel universe, Colter also discussed a project that ultimately didn’t take flight: a sequel to the 2023 action thriller “Plane.” The original film, starring Gerard Butler, grossed $74 million worldwide against a $25 million budget, leading to plans for a follow-up titled “Ship.”
“Ship” Sequel Grounded by Creative Differences
Colter was slated to reprise his role as Louis Gaspare in “Ship,” with Butler producing and making a cameo appearance. However, the project unexpectedly fell apart just two weeks before filming was scheduled to commence. According to Colter, Butler made a last-minute decision to withdraw from the project.
“It just, last-minute, Gerard [Butler] decided he didn’t want to go forward with it, and there wasn’t a lot of discussion about it,” Colter explained. “ [Butler] just . . . Two weeks out, he pulled out and we were sort of left trying to figure out what to do. And eventually, that dissolved. The script [was] basically picking up where we left off, what happened to that character, and how’d he get off the island. That was where we were gonna go with it. So, I was excited about it.” The reason behind Butler’s decision remains unclear.
The sequel’s script reportedly continued the narrative from the first film, focusing on the aftermath of the events and the fate of Colter’s character. Despite the disappointment of the project’s cancellation, Colter is moving forward with new creative endeavors.
New Projects on the Horizon for Mike Colter
Currently, Colter is collaborating with Robert and Michelle King, the showrunners of his previous series “Evil,” on a new television project titled “Cupertino.” Details about “Cupertino” remain scarce, but the reunion with the acclaimed creators suggests a promising future project for the actor.
The entertainment industry is constantly evolving, and Colter’s career exemplifies the dynamic nature of the business. From his impactful role as Luke Cage to his involvement in action thrillers and new television ventures, he continues to explore diverse opportunities.
As Marvel continues to expand its cinematic universe, the possibility of seeing familiar faces from the Netflix era remains a topic of intense fan speculation. Colter’s willingness to return, coupled with ongoing conversations with Marvel Studios, suggests that Luke Cage’s story may not be over yet. Fans of the superhero will be watching closely for any further developments regarding his potential involvement in future Marvel projects.
