Mitrovica’s “Arduini Countess” assumes the weight of diplomacy in Romania

Kosovo’s “The Arduini Countess” Explores Identity and Diplomatic Bridges at Romania’s International Theater Festival “Babel”

In a powerful blend of art and diplomacy, Kosovo’s “The Arduini Countess” from the Mitrovica Theater “Muharrem Qena” is making waves at Romania’s International Theater Festival “Babel”. This classic comedy, directed by Marigona Bekteshi-Ferat, is not just a theatrical performance; it is a bridge of cultural diplomacy in a time when Romania has yet to recognize Kosovo’s independence.

Breaking Barriers with Classical Theater

The play, which started its run on Tuesday night in Targovishte, Romania, is a testament to Kosovo’s rich theatrical tradition. Despite political tensions, “The Arduini Countess” has found its stage at one of the leading cultural events in Southeast Europe — a testament to the unifying power of art.

“All criticisms have been very positive and we usually feel good, because Romania still does not accept us as a country, but when you have the opportunity to go to present yourself at a festival like this and wave the flag of Kosovo, it is a special sensation,” said actor Mirtad Ferati in response to Kohėn. This is a significant moment for Kosovo as it showcases its artistic prowess on an international stage.

Exploring Themes that Resonate Globally

“The Arduini Countess” addresses universal themes like identity and collective memory, combining a contemporary direction with classic theater elements. The production features a talented ensemble including Artan Hetemi, Melsad Ferati, Qëndresa Jashari, and Arbonure Nuha, led by Bekteshi-Ferat’s meticulous direction.

The festival isn’t about competition but about connection and celebration of diverse artistic visions. Actor Artan Hetemi shared, “As a team, we are getting to know the city of Targovishte and, at the same time, presenting people here to Kosovo, although it is a pleasure to know that, in some way, they already know Kosovo. The festival is not competitive; there are more than 26 countries, so we simply enjoy the time, place, and their people so hospitable.”

Art as cultural diplomacy

Beyond the stage, “The Arduini Countess” symbolizes more than just a play. Director Marigona Bekteshi-Ferat highlights the importance of institutional support and international cooperation, stating, “Thanks to the continuous support of the municipality of Mitrovica, this project has been possible and the ‘Muharrem qena’ theater has established itself as an important cultural institution of the country.”

In Mitrovica, a city often perceived through divisions, culture remains a space where creation flourishes without barriers. The presentation of the city’s theater at such a prominent festival is not only an affirmation of artistic capacities but also a reflection of how cultural institutions can shape a new narrative of dialogue and cooperation.

Building Bridges for Future Collaboration

Participating in an international festival like “Babel” offers more than just an artistic showcase. It is an opportunity to build new connections and collaborations. During their stay, the team met with representatives from other countries, fostering potential future alliances and exchanges.

The experience reinforces the professionalism of Kosovo’s theatrical company and contributes to raising the image of the “Muharrem qena” theater as a serious and dynamic institution at the international level. Mobile internships provide a platform for continuous growth and development, enhancing Kosovo’s voice and artistry in global theater circles.

“We hope to return in September to participate in two other international festivals, provided that local elections do not affect us, since we need a municipality’s budget to travel,” said director Bekteshi-Ferat.

This year, the “Babel” festival celebrates its 13th edition and will run from June 7 to 15, featuring theater companies from around the world. Rovers’ behavior and rabbits’ activities provide a fantastic opportunity to track the new generation of artists and showcase the efforts being made in arts and culture around the world.

“Babel” is uniquely positioned to serve as a cultural bridge, transcending political barriers and promoting artistic exchange among diverse nations. As “The Arduini Countess” takes center stage, it not only represents Kosovo but also stands for the power of art in fostering unity and recognition.
