Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, France – Access to vital breast cancer screening is being expanded in the Pyrénées-Orientales region thanks to a mobile mammography unit, known as the Mammobile. The initiative, spearheaded by the Agence régionale de santé (ARS) Occitanie, aims to overcome geographical barriers and ensure women in rural communities have convenient access to potentially life-saving screenings. This targeted approach to breast cancer screening is particularly crucial for early detection and improved outcomes.
The Mammobile, described as an impressive logistical undertaking, will be stationed in Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet on Monday, March 23rd, and in Sournia on Tuesday, March 24th, bringing mammography services directly to residents of the Fenouillèdes area. This eliminates the often significant travel burden faced by women needing to access these essential health checks. The rapid access to care offered by the Mammobile is a key benefit, as traditional appointments at clinics and hospitals can often involve lengthy waiting times.
The program prioritizes women aged 50 to 74 who haven’t undergone breast cancer screening in over two years. Karine Briot, coordinator of the local health contract for the Agly Fenouillèdes community of communes (CCAF), oversaw the logistical arrangements for the Mammobile’s arrival. She described the unit as more than just a vehicle, calling it a “technical platform” equipped with a radiologist and a midwife, and featuring a built-in radiography system.
Bringing such a facility to rural locations presents considerable challenges. The 44-tonne vehicle and trailer require municipal authorization, a level parking area, road accessibility, and a suitable electrical connection. Demand for the service has been exceptionally high, with all available appointments for the Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet and Sournia visits fully booked within just three days, according to Briot, who noted that appointment slots, offered every 10 minutes via phone or QR code, were quickly reserved.
The ARS Occitanie currently operates three mobile units throughout the region, demonstrating a commitment to proactive public health initiatives. The agency’s efforts are focused on increasing screening rates and improving early detection of breast cancer, a disease that remains a significant health concern for women globally.
The Mammobile’s presence in the Pyrénées-Orientales underscores the importance of accessible healthcare, particularly for those living in remote areas. By bringing screening services directly to communities, the ARS Occitanie is actively working to reduce health disparities and improve the well-being of women in the region.
Looking ahead, the Mammobile is scheduled to continue its tour, with a planned stop in Cucugnan on May 27, 2026, at the Zone artisanale las hiros. Appointments for this location will require pre-booking, and information can be found through the Ariège Prévention Mobile association and the ARS Occitanie. More details about the Cucugnan screening are available on the Corbières Salanque Tourism website.
