Mom, 28, Diagnosed with Terminal Cancer After Lump Found During Childbirth

A routine birth took a devastating turn for Alex Stewart, a 28-year-old mother from Braintree, Essex. While giving birth to her son, Teddy, midwives discovered a lump that would ultimately lead to a terminal cancer diagnosis. Despite being up-to-date with her cervical cancer screenings, Alex now faces a heartbreaking prognosis, leaving her family and friends searching for ways to support her.

The discovery during labor initially didn’t raise immediate alarm, as Alex recounts the midwives initially believed it to be a varicose vein. However, a follow-up appointment eight weeks later confirmed the lump persisted, prompting further investigation. What followed was a whirlwind of tests – an MRI, blood work, and a biopsy – ultimately revealing a diagnosis of cervical cancer. This diagnosis came as a shock, as Alex had experienced no prior symptoms and had consistently attended her recommended screenings.

“I was really shocked. I had no symptoms at all,” Alex shared. “Every healthcare professional I met told me it was unlikely to be cancer as of my age and because I was healthy, so to get the diagnosis was very numbing.” Despite undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, the cancer aggressively spread, leading doctors to deliver the devastating news that her illness was terminal, with a prognosis of six months to two years to live.

The news has been particularly difficult for Alex, a children’s nurse herself, and her family. She worries about the impact on her two young children, 8-month-old Teddy and 3-year-old Elsie, and her husband, Joe. “My first thought was, ‘How would the children cope without having a mom?’” she recalled. “I also felt how unfair life could be. I was enjoying being a parent to two children, and this was being taken away from me.” The couple had also not yet taken their honeymoon, adding another layer of grief to the situation.

Navigating treatment while caring for her family has been incredibly challenging. Alex describes the daily fluctuations in her energy levels, stating, “Every day is different. Sometimes I have energy and can do a lot, other times I am so tired I just want to sleep.” Her parents have moved in to provide support, allowing her to focus on spending quality time with her children. Friends have also rallied around the family, launching a GoFundMe campaign to assist with financial burdens and ensure Alex’s comfort during treatment.

Alex emphasizes the importance of continued vigilance regarding cervical cancer screenings, even with regular check-ups. “Even though my pap smear test was clear and I was vaccinated against HPV, I want everyone to make sure they are vaccinated against HPV and are up to date with their smears,” she urges. She expressed concern over recent changes extending the screening interval to every five years, advocating for more frequent screenings to aid in early detection. According to the National Cancer Institute, HPV is a major cause of cervical cancer.

Despite the grim prognosis, Alex remains focused on making the most of her time with her family. “Every day, I fight a little bit more so that I can spend as much time with them and make as many memories as possible,” she says. She acknowledges the emotional toll, advising others facing similar circumstances to “Remain positive and spend as much time with your family making memories…also take time for yourself and allow yourself to be upset and angry.”

Alex’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of cancer and the importance of proactive health measures. As she continues to navigate her treatment, her focus remains on cherishing every moment with her loved ones and advocating for increased awareness of cervical cancer prevention. The medical community continues to research and refine methods for early detection and treatment of cervical cancer, offering hope for improved outcomes in the future.
