Fonasa incorporated more than 600 thousand new members in 2023, of which more than half came from an isapre, exceeding 16.2 million users in total.
In detail, during last year 616,320 people joined the public insurer, corresponding to an increase of 3.95% compared to December 2022, of which 344,374 went from an isapre to Fonasa, according to La Tercera.
Therefore, in two years, Fonasa obtained 996,088 additional users, while new users from isapres total 595,293 in said period of time.
The director of Fonasa, Camilo Cid, commented that these figures “confirm the projection made regarding the increase in users of the Fund that we estimated for the year 2023. We also highlight that the majority of the new users of the Fund are young people with income higher, which implies a change in the typical migration of those who arrived at Fonasa.”
By age group, 55% of the total population belonging to Fonasa (8,993,805 people) are affiliates who are between 20 and 59 years old; Those under 20 years old represent 24% and those over 60 are 21%.
By gender, Fonasa reported that 8,484,218 are women, 7,744,672 are men, 752 people are registered as intersex and 256 affiliates with undefined sex.
“We value that the vast majority of people living in the country have chosen Fonasa to guarantee their access to health, with financial protection, solidarity, equity and without discrimination. These figures represent an incentive for us to continue improving our management, and we hope that, through the strengthening of Fonasa contemplated in the framework of the short law, we can continue advancing in this sense,” said Cid.
According to figures from the Superintendency of Health, the isapres closed November with 2,732,447 beneficiaries (contributors plus charges), this represents an interannual drop of 12.68% or 397,107 fewer people in 12 months. This number of affiliates is the lowest since February 2011
