Moroccan Goalkeeper Joins FCS Jonzac After Move From Morocco

by Luis Mendoza - Sport Editor

Jonzac, France – The FCS Jonzac has welcomed a new goalkeeper with a compelling story, Iliass Mahboub. The 25-year-old’s journey to the Charente-Maritime region was spurred by family commitments, but his passion for the game quickly led him to seek a place within the local football scene. Mahboub’s background includes experience in the Moroccan football system, even reaching the second division, before following his wife, originally from Bedenac, as she prepared for the birth of their child in France.

Mahboub’s arrival at FCS Jonzac came about through direct contact with the club’s president. After settling in, he proactively reached out, quickly beginning training and impressing the coaching staff. “He made a very good impression the first time he came,” noted head coach Benoit Vulvin. “Clément [Martineau] was returning from two years of injury, so it was important to have two goalkeepers at R3 level or higher.” The club, located in the commune of Bedenac, as confirmed by Wikipedia, provides a new chapter for the Moroccan native.

Mahboub’s footballing education began at the City Foot Académie in Casablanca at the age of 10, where he remained until the U15 level. He then progressed to TAS Casablanca (competing in the Moroccan third division, D3) until U17, before earning a spot at the prestigious Wydad Athletic Club. He spent three years developing his skills at Wydad, completing his youth career before an opportunity arose in Romania with FCM Târgoviște (D4). His time in Romania was brief, lasting only five months, before he returned to Morocco, spending two years with Racing Club Athletic (D2) and then a stint at TAS Club Athletic.

Despite a promising start with FCS Jonzac, Mahboub faced an early setback. He sustained a torn quadriceps muscle during the fourth round of the Coupe de France against Verdille on September 27th, resulting in a four-week absence. “In Morocco, we play a lot on artificial surfaces. Here, they are natural pitches. My body had to adapt,” Mahboub explained. He regained his rhythm with the reserve team, working towards a return to peak form, supported by his fellow goalkeeper, Clément Martineau. Vulvin emphasized the strength of having two capable goalkeepers, stating, “I can count on both of them, and that’s a strength.”

Alternating Roles in Goal

Since the start of the season, Mahboub and Martineau have been sharing goalkeeping duties, working diligently and complementing each other’s skills. Mahboub praised the quality of training at Jonzac, the team’s cohesion, and the support from the club’s leadership, creating a positive environment for development. “The training sessions are at a very good level. The team is united with a good understanding. The president and coaches are always there when we need them. That helps to operate in good conditions,” he said shortly before the winter break.

Regional Football Roundup

Elsewhere in the region, Royan-Vaux is showing promise, consolidating its third-place position in Regional 3 after a 4-2 victory over Rochefort B. Cognac, the league leader, has experienced a slight dip in form, with a draw against Celles Verrines (1-1) and a home defeat to Rochefort B (1-2), narrowing the gap to Royan-Vaux to four points. The two teams are scheduled to meet on March 21st in Charente during the 16th matchday of the Regional 3 pool E.

Aunis Avenir is also performing well, currently second in Regional 3 pool A, one point behind Bressuire B, with two games in hand. They are on a six-game winning streak and will face Inter Bocage (10th) this weekend. FC Rochefort is facing challenges in both Regional 1 and Regional 3, with the first team losing to Brive (0-2) and the B team falling to Royan-Vaux (4-2).

A remarkable result in Regional 1 saw Trélissac defeat Neuville 22-0, while Neuville remains without a win this season, having scored only one goal and conceded 93.

Iliass Mahboub’s integration into FCS Jonzac represents a blend of personal circumstances and professional ambition. His experience in the Moroccan leagues, coupled with his adaptability and dedication, positions him as a valuable asset to the team. As he continues to settle into his new surroundings and regain full fitness, his contribution to FCS Jonzac will be closely watched.

The coming weeks will be crucial for both Mahboub and FCS Jonzac as they navigate the challenges of the Regional 3 league. Fans will be eager to observe how the goalkeeper continues to develop and contribute to the team’s success.
