Moscow Bombing Ukraine: Latest Updates & Impact

by Omar El Sayed - World Editor

Kyiv – Ukrainian forces have reportedly halted a Russian advance in the Zaporizhzhia region, according to statements from Ukrainian officials. The fighting comes amid Moscow’s ongoing aerial bombardment of Ukrainian cities, a strategy that has intensified in recent months as Russia seeks to consolidate its control over occupied territories and disrupt Ukrainian supply lines.

The operation, as described by Ukrainian military sources, “stopped the enemy’s approach” on the regional capital, the city of Zaporizhzhia. Whereas details remain limited and independent verification is challenging, the claim suggests a successful defensive maneuver by Ukrainian troops against a renewed Russian push in the south. The Zaporizhzhia region is strategically important, bordering the partially occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk, and control over it would provide Russia with a land bridge to Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014.

The recent fighting in Zaporizhzhia is part of a broader pattern of intensified conflict along the eastern and southern fronts. Russia has been focusing its efforts on capturing more territory in the Donetsk region, particularly around the city of Bakhmut, which has been the site of fierce battles for months. The Institute for the Study of War, a U.S.-based think tank, has noted that Russian forces are attempting to stretch Ukrainian defenses by launching offensives along multiple axes, but have achieved only incremental gains. Recent reports indicate Russian troops have advanced at a “glacial pace” in recent months.

Impact on Civilian Infrastructure

The ongoing conflict continues to take a heavy toll on civilian infrastructure. Russian strikes have repeatedly targeted critical infrastructure, including energy facilities, causing widespread power outages and disrupting essential services. The city of Zaporizhzhia, home to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, has been particularly vulnerable, raising concerns about a potential nuclear disaster. Images and reports document the extensive damage inflicted on Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Mariupol, highlighting the devastating impact of the war on civilian life.

The destruction extends beyond major cities. Smaller towns like Toretsk, in the Donetsk region, have also suffered significant damage, with residential buildings and infrastructure reduced to rubble. The scale of destruction is reminiscent of the devastation seen in Mariupol, a port city that was largely destroyed during the initial stages of the invasion.

International Response and Aid

The international community has condemned Russia’s actions and provided Ukraine with substantial military and humanitarian aid. The United States, the European Union, and other countries have imposed sanctions on Russia in an effort to pressure Moscow to end the war. However, these sanctions have had a limited impact on Russia’s military capabilities, and the conflict continues to escalate.

The United Nations has called for a ceasefire and a negotiated settlement to the conflict, but Russia has shown little willingness to engage in meaningful negotiations. The International Criminal Court is investigating allegations of war crimes committed in Ukraine, and has issued arrest warrants for several Russian officials.

The Situation in Occupied Territories

Five key Ukrainian regions – Mariupol, Donetsk, Luhansk, Melitopol, and Berdiansk – are currently under Russian control. These cities hold significant military, trade, and political value, shaping the direction of the war. Reports from occupied territories indicate that Russia is attempting to integrate these regions into its own political and economic system, a move that has been widely condemned by Ukraine and the international community.

The situation in Mariupol remains particularly dire. The city, once home to over 400,000 people, has been largely reduced to rubble, and its remaining residents face severe shortages of food, water, and medical care. Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of forcibly deporting Ukrainian citizens from occupied territories to Russia, a claim that Moscow denies.

As of April 23, 2025, Ukraine officially recognizes 463 cities within its borders, according to the Verkhovna Rada, the country’s parliament. The list of cities is ordered by population, with estimates from 2022 compared to the 2001 Ukrainian census.

Looking ahead, the situation in Zaporizhzhia and other regions of Ukraine remains highly volatile. The outcome of the fighting will likely depend on the continued flow of Western aid to Ukraine, as well as Russia’s ability to mobilize additional forces. The next few weeks will be critical in determining whether the conflict will escalate further or whether there is a possibility of a negotiated settlement.
