Thanjavur: A case has been registered once morest a retired police officer and his brother for locking their mother at home for 10 years. A case has been registered once morest Shanmukhasundaram, 50, a police inspector in Chennai, and his younger brother Venkatesh, 45. Their mother Jnana Jyoti (72) was rescued.

On Friday, following the couple refused to hand over the keys to the house, Social Welfare Department officials, with the help of police, broke into the house and rescued the elderly woman. They were admitted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, said District Collector Dinesh Ponraj Oliver.

The video of the woman lying naked inside the house was circulated on social media. Social Welfare Department officials rushed to the spot and rescued the elderly woman following a tip-off from someone. Police said Jnanajyothi would make noise when she was hungry and neighbors would throw biscuits or fruit at her. Police added that the neighbors were aware of Jnana Jyoti’s condition.

Shanmukhasundaram told mediapersons that Venkatesh spends Rs 30,000 every month on his mother’s pension.
