Baku, Azerbaijan – A seismic shift is underway in the world of motorsport as Swiss racing driver Laura Villars, 28, has declared her candidacy for the Presidency of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). This groundbreaking move could see the first woman ever ascend to the leadership of the organization that oversees Formula 1 and numerous other racing series.

The announcement, made during racing events in Baku on September 19, 2025, challenges the status quo within the traditionally conservative FIA. Villars, who has competed in Formula 4 Saudi Arabia and the Ferrari Challenge, will contend with incumbent President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and American contender Tim Mayer.

A Platform for Change

Villars’ campaign is built upon a core manifesto emphasizing democratic reform and greater inclusivity within the FIA. She has stated her commitment to transforming the FIA back into an organization centered around it’s member clubs and license holders. Her key objectives include increased financial openness, a stronger commitment to integrating women into motorsport, and more responsible leadership practices.

According to reports, Villars has until October 24th to formally submit all required documentation for her candidacy. Should she proceed, she will need to assemble a leadership team, including a Senate President, two Vice Presidents (covering motorsport and automotive mobility), and seven regional representatives.

Key Pillars of the Villars Platform

Villars has outlined several central tenets that will guide her potential presidency:

  • Enhanced Transparency: Implementing clearer financial reporting and decision-making processes.
  • Women in Motorsport: Expanding opportunities and support for female participation at all levels of racing.
  • Democratic Governance: Strengthening the voice of member clubs and promoting accountability within the FIA.

Did You Know? The FIA represents over 100 million motorists worldwide and is the governing body for major motorsports, including Formula 1, World Rally Championship, and Formula E.

The emergence of Villars as a candidate has ignited discussion about the future direction of the FIA. Questions have been raised regarding the current management’s transparency, prompting calls for greater oversight. Former rally champion Carlos Sainz sr. had initially considered a run for the presidency but ultimately decided against it in June.
