Mourning in sports: former boxer Bernardo Caraballo dies | THE UNIVERSAL

In the early hours of this Thursday, January 20, the ex-boxer from Cartagena, Bernardo Caraballo, 80 years old and who had been presenting heart difficulties since 2020, passed away.

The former boxer, a native of Bocachica, was the first Colombian to fight for a world boxing title. It was in El Campín de Bogotá on November 27, 1964 when he faced the Brazilian Eder Jofre in the bantamweight category. He lost by knockout in the seventh round.

Although Caraballo never managed to be a world champion in the sport of flat noses, he was recognized by the people for his fighting style. It was characterized by a fast, elegant boxing style with a lot of movement. He was an idol without a crown.

Caraballo contested 108 fights in the flyweight (112 pounds), bantamweight (118) and featherweight (126) categories. He won 84, drew 6 and lost 18.
