It will soon no longer be necessary to carry out a complex procedure in front of kindergartens, schools and leisure facilities.

Austria’s municipalities have more opportunities to introduce traffic restrictions. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) and Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) presented an amendment to the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) on Wednesday, which allows municipalities to impose speed limits themselves near kindergartens, children’s playgrounds, leisure facilities or care facilities, without having to go through a procedure is necessary at the district administration.
The government is thus responding to the wishes of a broad initiative by the Austrian Transport Club, the Association of Cities and more than 283 municipalities that had called for such a change in the law.

The risk of fatal injuries decreases significantly at 30 km/h

The VCÖ also provides some figures for the 30 km/h initiative: The risk of fatal injuries for people walking decreases by up to 75 percent at 30 km/h instead of 50 km/h. In addition, the lower speed results in a more even traffic flow and fewer acceleration phases. According to a study by the German Federal Environment Agency, the human ear perceives the lower speed as a halving of the volume of traffic.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) said that communities would also have the opportunity to carry out speed measurements and prescribe school streets. In addition, emergency services are allowed to stop and park when transporting patients.
