LOS ANGELES, Dec. 14, 2023 (Xinhua) — A new study using data from NASA’s Cassini mission has found evidence of a major component of life and a powerful source of chemical energy on Saturn’s icy moon Enceladus.

The study, published Thursday in the journal Nature Science, found strong evidence for the existence of hydrogen cyanide, an essential part of the origin of life.

Researchers also uncovered evidence that the ocean, hidden beneath the moon’s icy outer shell, holds a powerful source of chemical energy.

It is noteworthy that the source of energy is not yet known, but it is in the form of several organic compounds, some of which are found on Earth and serve as food for living organisms.

The results indicate that there may be much more chemical energy inside this small moon than previously thought. The more energy available, the more likely and sustainable life is, according to NASA.
