Hungary’s Orbán Unveils Controversial Tax Plan,Fuels Political Tension

Budapest – Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party is facing scrutiny after unveiling a national consultation centered around proposed tax increases, sparking a political clash with opposition leader Péter Magyar‘s Tisza Party. The initiative, announced following a speech at Kötcse, aims to gather public opinion on potential changes to Hungary’s tax structure.

The consultation includes five key questions:

* Do you agree that the current flat-rate income tax system should be replaced by a higher tax rate?
* Do you agree that family tax breaks need to be narrowed?
* Do you agree that the tax exemption for mothers and young peopel should be abolished?
* Do you agree that Hungary will acquire oil and gas from more expensive sources instead of cheaper russian energy, even if this causes utility bills to increase and the utility cuts to cease?
* Do you agree with raising corporate tax paid by companies?

Orbán’s government has framed the consultation as a response to “leaked tax increase plans” proposed by the Tisza Party, accusing them of advocating for policies that will hurt Hungarian families. This follows a campaign initiated in August, where Fidesz alleged that the Tisza party had a secret economic plan.

Péter Magyar has refuted these claims, releasing his own detailed tax proposals. the debate comes amid broader concerns about Hungary’s economic direction and its reliance on Russian energy sources. The national consultation is seen by many as a move to mobilize Fidesz supporters ahead of potential political challenges.
