The investigator delivered an ultimatum to the mother of Alexei Navalny, demanding that within three hours she agree to the politician’s secret funeral without a public farewell. Navalny’s associates reported this Kira Yarmysh and Ivan Zhdanov.
If Navalny’s mother does not agree to this condition, the politician “will be buried in a colony,” the investigator said.
“She refused to negotiate with the Investigative Committee because they do not have the authority to decide how and where she should bury her son. She demands compliance with the law, which obliges investigators to hand over the body within two days from the moment the cause of death is established. According to the medical documents she signed, these two days expire tomorrow. She insists that the authorities allow the funeral and memorial service to be held in accordance with customs,” Yarmysh said.
On February 22, Lyudmila Navalnaya reported that she was shown her son’s body in the Salekhard morgue. There she was shown a medical certificate regarding her son’s death, which she signed. According to Navalny’s press secretary Kira Yarmysh, the medical death certificate states that the politician died of “natural causes.” The body of her son was not given to Lyudmila Navalnaya.
FBK director Ivan Zhdanov said that investigators put forward conditions for the mother of Alexei Navalny to release the body. In particular, relatives and associates of the politician must keep information regarding the funeral secret until the plane from Salekhard lands in Moscow, Navalny’s family must be accompanied by Investigative Committee employees throughout the entire time until the end of the funeral, and the date of burial must be determined only when the body the politician will be brought to Moscow.
