Navigating the Maze: The Experience of Shopping at Ikea and Decathlon

2024-04-12 19:39:00

Those who have already been to an Ikea – and there are many of them – certainly know this: the store specializing in flat-pack furniture has arranged its sites in a sort of maze that forces its visitors to go through all the rooms. You never know, someone who comes to buy a new bed may also need a saucepan, a shower mat or a bag of candles.

A concept now copied by another mass distribution giant: Decathlon. This week, we went to Evere… whose layout has been completely redesigned. From now on, you have to, like at Ikea, follow a circuit which requires you to go through all the themes before arriving at the checkouts. Except that unlike Ikea, there is no shortcut allowing you to go from point A to point Z without going through all the other letters of the alphabet.

Result: although we had only come to buy waterproof protection for our backpack, we had to go through the football, rugby or even horse riding sections, for which we had no interest. And we barely force the line.

While we can understand the business logic, we’re not sure it makes the experience enjoyable for customers. In any case, we didn’t like it at all!
