Nebraska Tennis Completes Comeback Against Oregon, 4-3 | Van Der Sijs Wins Decisive Match

Lincoln, NE – In a thrilling display of resilience, the No. 54 Nebraska men’s tennis team overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat No. 46 Oregon 4-3 on Sunday at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. The victory hinged on a dramatic comeback fueled by the performance of freshman Niels Van Der Sijs, who secured the decisive point after a heartbreaking loss just days prior.

The Huskers, facing a seemingly insurmountable challenge, rallied point by point, showcasing a tenacity that ultimately overwhelmed the visiting Ducks. The match culminated in a jubilant scene as Van Der Sijs clinched the win, mobbed by his teammates on the court. This marks Nebraska’s second conference win of the season, improving their overall record to 11-9 (3-6 in Big Ten play).

The comeback was particularly sweet for Van Der Sijs, who experienced a tough defeat against Washington freshman Hyeonseok Seo on Friday, March 27. Tied 3-3 against the Huskies, Van Der Sijs fell short in a close match, losing 7-6, 7-6. He channeled that experience into a determined performance against Oregon’s Lachlan Robertson, ultimately prevailing after dropping the first set.

Van Der Sijs Seals the Comeback

After falling behind early, Van Der Sijs dug deep, taking the final two sets against Robertson 7-5 and 6-3 to secure the team victory. “He made one mistake, two mistakes and then it gets to deuce, then it’s 50-50, and I felt like I had the momentum because I won those two last points, and it was just hanging tough, just like we always practice,” Van Der Sijs explained. “And then he just misses it by an inch and we got the win.”

The path to victory wasn’t simple. Nebraska initially struggled, dropping the doubles point and falling behind in two singles matches. However, a crucial win from junior Henry Lamchinniah sparked the Huskers’ turnaround. Lamchinniah defeated Oregon senior Russell Soohoo in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, providing a much-needed boost to the team’s energy.

Team Energy and Strategic Adjustments

Lamchinniah emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive attitude even when facing adversity. “We got off to a tough start, losing the doubles point, and we went down a few courts early,” he said. “When you observe that happen, you know it’s kind of your responsibility as a leader of the team to step up and bring some more energy and get the other boys going a bit.”

Following Lamchinniah’s lead, redshirt sophomore Colson Wells and senior Joan Torres Espinosa also secured victories in their respective singles matches, contributing to the Nebraska comeback. Wells won 6-3, 6-4, while Torres Espinosa prevailed 6-4, 7-5. The Huskers demonstrated an ability to adjust their game and capitalize on opportunities, winning six of eight final sets throughout the match.

Head coach Peter Kobelt highlighted the team’s physical and mental toughness as key factors in their success. According to Huskers.com, Kobelt adjusted the team’s strategy to exploit Oregon’s weaknesses, emphasizing a more physical style of play. “One of our pillars of our program is toughness and fitness,” Kobelt said. “It was hot out today, and I knew our team was prepared for those conditions. The adjustment we made was to make the match a little bit more physical… If they were going to win the point, they were going to need to run.”

Looking Ahead for the Huskers

Van Der Sijs reflected on the team’s growing camaraderie and the shift in motivation from individual play to a collective effort. “Now that we’re that deep in the season, we really build a family with all those guys. You play for those guys, you want to win for them, you want to win for the university. It’s something different than juniors, you don’t play for yourself, you play for something bigger.”

The Nebraska men’s tennis team will appear to continue their momentum as they face Wisconsin at 12:00 p.m. CT on Friday, April 4, 2025, at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. The Huskers will aim to build on this hard-fought victory and secure another conference win.
