A demonstrative step taken by the regime in Riyadh on Saturday showed just how tedious the path towards normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia can actually be: a permanent ambassador for Palestine was nominated, who is also the consul-general in Jerusalem. It is true that the new ambassador will exercise his office neither in Jerusalem nor in Ramallah, but from Jordan, and it is not an additional diplomat who is being sent for this – the new tasks will simply be imposed on the current Saudi ambassador in Amman. The step is nevertheless symbolically effective.
