New blow for Nokia. The Finnish telecoms equipment manufacturer was ousted from a mega contract worth 14 billion dollars in the United States in favor of its great rival Ericsson, just two months following presenting a huge cost reduction plan which will lead it to eliminate between 9,000 and 14,000 positions over three years, or up to 16% of its workforce.

The contract in question, lasting five years, consists of building a new Open RAN network for the American operator AT&T. In this architecture, more economical and less energy-intensive, the telecoms network runs in the cloud, thanks to interchangeable software, unlike traditional equipment from Nokia, Ericsson or Huawei, which can be mixed less well.
