The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for Miyazaki, Ehime and Kochi prefectures, as well as the coasts of Oita and Kagoshima. The expected wave height is one metre.

Following the quake, Miyazaki prefecture authorities have suspended Kyushu Shinkansen and Nishi-Kyushu train services until further notice. Nuclear power plants in Kyushu and Shikoku are being urgently checked for possible operational damage.
