GALLOWAY, N.J. – Leaders from AtlantiCare and Select Medical, along with project team members and local officials, recently celebrated a major milestone in the construction of the community’s new inpatient rehabilitation hospital: the signing a ceremonial steel beam that will be placed inside the facility as the healthcare facility enters its next phase of development. the beam-signing celebration marks the first public milestone in a joint venture partnership between atlanticare, southeastern New Jersey’s largest health system, and Select Medical, one of the nation’s largest providers of post-acute care.

The two healthcare organizations are collaborating to build a 60-bed, all-private-room inpatient rehabilitation hospital, scheduled to open in mid-2026, one mile east of AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center – Mainland Campus in Galloway Township. The facility will expand access to advanced, specialized care for patients who are recovering from stroke, brain and spinal cord injuries, amputation, orthopedic trauma, neurological disorders and other complex medical conditions.

“This hospital fills a critical need in our region. In partnership with Select Medical, we are creating a destination for high-quality rehabilitation care that patients and families can access right hear at home,” said Michael Charlton, president and chief executive officer of AtlantiCare, in a statement. “Too often, patients and families have had to leave the area to receive the care they need after a serious illness or injury. This new facility changes that experience by providing expert rehabilitation close to home, connected to our care teams and designed around each person’s unique recovery goals.”

The three-story hospital will implement a coordinated, multidisciplinary care model. The care team will include physiatrists (physicians board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation), certified rehabilitation nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, respiratory therapists, case managers, dietitians and other specialists supporting each patient’s recovery journey.

“Our goal is to provide the right care at the right time to help patients achieve the best possible outcomes,” said david Chernow, chief executive officer of Select Medical, in a statement “Through this partnership with AtlantiCare, we look forward to expanding access to world-class rehabilitation medicine in southeastern New Jersey. This new hospital reflects our shared commitment to delivering innovative, patient-focused care that helps individuals return to independence, their families and communities.”

The new AtlantiCare Rehabilitation Hospital will be located at Bacharach Park, a name chosen to honor the legacy of the Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation.

Understanding the Rehabilitation Process

Rehabilitation isn’t simply about regaining physical strength; it’s a holistic process focused on restoring a patient’s overall function and independence. The process typically involves:

  1. Initial Assessment: A thorough evaluation by a team of rehabilitation specialists to determine the patient’s needs and goals.
  2. individualized Treatment Plan: Growth of a customized plan outlining specific therapy interventions and goals.
  3. Intensive Therapy: Regular therapy sessions focusing on physical, occupational, and/or speech rehabilitation.
  4. Functional Training: Activities designed to simulate real-life tasks and promote independence.
  5. Education & Support: Providing patients and their families with education and support to navigate the recovery process.
  6. Discharge Planning: Preparing patients for a safe and successful transition back to their homes and communities.

Benefits of Inpatient Rehabilitation

Choosing an inpatient rehabilitation facility over other care settings (like skilled nursing facilities) offers several advantages:

Intensive Therapy: Inpatient programs provide a higher intensity of therapy, typically several hours per day, five to seven days a week.

Multidisciplinary Team: Access to a comprehensive team of rehabilitation specialists.

24/7 Medical Monitoring: Continuous medical supervision and support.

Focus on Functional Goals: Programs are specifically designed to help patients regain functional independence.

* Peer Support: Opportunities to connect with other patients undergoing similar rehabilitation journeys.

future Outlook & Expansion Plans

The hospital’s leadership has indicated plans for future expansion, including the potential addition of specialized programs for pediatric rehabilitation and cardiac rehabilitation. This commitment to growth underscores the hospital’s dedication to meeting the evolving healthcare needs of the New Jersey community. The facility is expected to become a regional center of excellence for rehabilitation medicine, attracting leading physicians and researchers to the state.
