New Theatre Leaders Named at Milagro, Everyman, HERE, & Laguna Playhouse

The American theatre landscape is experiencing a wave of leadership transitions, with several prominent organizations announcing new artistic and executive directors. These changes signal fresh perspectives and continued commitment to artistic excellence across the country, from the Pacific Northwest to the East Coast and California. These appointments approach at a pivotal moment for the performing arts, as organizations navigate evolving audience expectations and a renewed focus on community engagement.

Among the most notable changes, Milagro Theatre in Portland, Oregon, has named Maya Malan-Gonzalez as its interim artistic director. Simultaneously, Everyman Theatre in Baltimore has appointed Brandon Weinbrenner as its next artistic director, whereas HERE Arts Center in New York City is seeing a shift in its co-directorship as Lauren Miller steps down to pursue political organizing. On the West Coast, Laguna Playhouse welcomes Adele Adkins as its new managing director. These leadership updates reflect a dynamic period of growth and adaptation within the regional theatre ecosystem.

Milagro Theatre Welcomes Interim Artistic Director

Maya Malan-Gonzalez, a lifelong member of Milagro, steps into the role of interim artistic director, beginning January 1st. Her appointment bridges a leadership gap as the theatre embarks on a nationwide search for a permanent artistic leader. Malan-Gonzalez brings a deep connection to Milagro, having performed in 20 productions since the age of six, and currently serves as the theatre’s board president. She is also the daughter of Milagro co-founders Dañel Malán-González and José Eduardo González y Salazar, and a member of Studio Luna. Her function consistently centers Latine culture and women’s voices, and Milagro has commissioned and produced four of her plays: Blast Off, Huelga, A Xmas Cuento Remix (an NNPN rolling world premiere), and Worry Dolls. Beyond Milagro, Malan-Gonzalez has performed across the U.S. And internationally, including at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and Seattle Rep. She also has screen and voiceover credits, including Apple TV’s Lessons in Chemistry and Audible’s Women of Fire. She holds a BFA in acting from the Theatre School at DePaul University.

Everyman Theatre Names Brandon Weinbrenner as Artistic Director

Brandon Weinbrenner will assume the role of artistic director at Everyman Theatre in Baltimore starting in July, succeeding founding artistic director Vincent M. Lancisi, who is retiring after a 35-year tenure. Weinbrenner currently serves as associate artistic director at the Alley Theatre in Houston, where he has directed plays that achieved both critical acclaim and box office success. He is a founder of the Alley’s All New Festival and a directing fellow at Berkeley Rep’s the Ground Floor, demonstrating a commitment to developing new work. Weinbrenner also spearheaded the creation of the University of Houston/Alley Theatre MFA in Acting program. He intends to continue Everyman’s tradition of utilizing a resident company of local actors and artisans, strengthening ties with the Baltimore community. He will partner with Marissa LaRose, Everyman’s managing director since April 2020. Weinbrenner earned a BFA in acting from the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theatre’s acting program.

HERE Arts Center Sees Leadership Transition

Off-Broadway’s HERE Arts Center is undergoing a leadership shift as co-director Lauren Miller departs at the end of January to dedicate herself to political organizing. Miller, who joined the leadership cohort in 2024, cited the evolving political landscape and the urgent needs of immigrant communities surrounding the theatre as driving forces behind her decision. Jesse Cameron Alick, Annalisa Dias, and Lanxing Fu will continue to serve as co-directors, maintaining the organization’s commitment to innovative and experimental performance.

Laguna Playhouse Appoints New Managing Director

Adele Adkins has been appointed as the new managing director of Laguna Playhouse in California. Adkins brings over 25 years of experience in nonprofit theatre management and programming to the role. Most recently, she served as managing director of Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where she successfully expanded revenue streams and increased subscriber growth. Throughout her career, she has booked performances ranging from classical music to Broadway tours and country music artists, leading organizations such as the Clark State Performing Arts Center in Ohio and the Collins Center for the Arts at the University of Maine. A Juilliard-trained cellist, Adkins brings a lifelong passion for performance and arts leadership to Laguna Playhouse.

These leadership changes across the American theatre landscape signal a period of renewal and adaptation. As these new directors take the helm, audiences can anticipate fresh artistic visions and a continued dedication to the power of live performance. The coming seasons will undoubtedly reflect the unique perspectives and priorities of these individuals, shaping the future of regional theatre and its role in communities nationwide.
