A minor earthquake, registering a magnitude of 2.7, struck near Hillsdale, New Jersey, on Tuesday afternoon. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the event occurred at 12:11 pm Miami time.

Reports indicate that dozens of individuals from Staten Island to southwestern Connecticut experienced slight tremors. While the earthquake was relatively weak, its shallow depth – approximately 13 kilometers – likely contributed to its widespread perception.

Geological factors play a significant role in how seismic events are felt.According to the USGS, the older, denser, and more compressed rocks found in the eastern United States efficiently transmit seismic energy over greater distances.

Hillsdale, New Jersey, is situated roughly 40 kilometers northwest of Manhattan. The USGS continues to monitor the region for any aftershocks.
