Breaking: TRT-5 CHV Launches Observatory for HIV Treatment Refusals and Renouncements
Paris – In a significant development targeting the widespread challenge of HIV treatment access, the TRT-5 CHV collective has announced the establishment of a national observatory to document refusals and renunciations related to post-exposure treatment (TPE) against HIV. This initiative aims to ensure this critical treatment reaches those most in need, and comes out of the hospital.
Addressing Major Obstacles
Despite years of advocacy and mobilization, TPE continues to be poorly distributed and poorly understood. The new observatory will collect testimonies from June 2025, with two free webinars slated for July 1 and 2 to raise awareness among health professionals and associative actors. The ultimate goal: to streamline the distribution of TPE beyond hospital settings, ensuring timely access for all.
TPE: What is it and Why is it Crucial?
Post-exposure treatment (TPE), also known as emergency treatment, is a critical tool in preventing HIV infection. Effective within 48 hours of exposure, TPE is currently limited to hospital settings or specific health centers. The collective’s plea urges broader access, including in pharmacies and community organizations.
Past Efforts and Current Challenges
Since 2021, the TRT-5 CHV has been documenting cases of delay and stigma surrounding TPE. “Don’t get upset, emergency treatment is not an emergency!” retorted a caregiver to someone exposed to HIV, highlighting deeper issues of awareness and stigma. The collective calls for expanded knowledge among professionals and easier access, advocating for “Starter Kits” provided by associations.
Looking Forward: A Call for Change
As the observatory launches, the collective urges health authorities to simplify prescription and dispensation protocols, ensuring TPE reaches vulnerable populations effectively. This effort underscores the urgent need for public health innovations, placing user experience and accessibility at the forefront.
