California Governor Gavin Newsom is challenging a directive from the Trump administration to restart offshore oil drilling, according to San Francisco political commentator Richie Greenberg.
The conflict centers on the Trump administration’s push to resume oil exploration and extraction in federal waters off the California coast. Newsom’s opposition, as highlighted by Greenberg on Fox News, marks a direct confrontation with federal policy. This follows a pattern of disputes between the two leaders, including Newsom’s recent trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he reportedly “heckled” President Trump, according to the New York Post.
Newsom’s resistance extends beyond verbal opposition. In August 2025, the Governor’s office announced a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request seeking information regarding what Newsom characterized as the Trump administration’s misuse of federal agents at a redistricting event. The Governor alleged that the administration was using federal law enforcement as a “personal police force and political pawns,” attempting to intimidate political opponents and defend what Trump perceives as potential threats.
The dispute over offshore drilling also comes amid a broader context of rising oil prices, which Newsom has publicly criticized, suggesting the increase contradicts President Trump’s claims of economic success, according to MSN reports. Newsom’s actions are not without criticism, with some, like Greenberg, suggesting the Governor frequently leaves California while the state faces significant challenges.
The Governor’s office has not yet released the findings of the FOIA request regarding the alleged misuse of federal agents. The Trump administration has not publicly responded to Newsom’s latest criticisms regarding offshore drilling, nor has it addressed the FOIA request.
