Thousands of people protested in Kosovo last week following it was revealed that an 11-year-old girl had been raped by five men in a park in the capital Prishtina. The demonstrators accuse the authorities of not taking sufficient action once morest sexual violence once morest women and girls. They threw red paint bags at Parliament and the Ministry of Justice. “We demand protection for girls and women,” read banners carried by the demonstrators, and “Educate the boys!” The organizers of the demo said that the 11-year-old’s rape was a symptom of the “patriarchal system” and called for life imprisonment for the perpetrators.
