In an election marked by tension and expectations, President Nicolás Maduro has been re-elected as Venezuela’s leader. According to official results announced by the president of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Elvis Amoroso, with 80% of the tables counted and a voter turnout of 59%, Maduro obtained 51.2% of the votes, defeating the opposition candidate, Edmundo González, who obtained 44.2%.
The first CNE bulletin revealed that Maduro received 5,150,092 votes, consolidating his victory against the 4,445,978 votes obtained by González, who had the support of María Corina Machado. This result allows Maduro to begin his third term at the head of the Executive, which will run from January 2025 to January 2031.
The announcement of Maduro’s reelection was made close to midnight, at which time Amoroso stressed the legitimacy of the electoral process and called on the Attorney General’s Office to investigate an alleged attack on the data transmission system.
The election, which attracted attention both nationally and internationally, ended with the victory of Maduro, who will face the challenge of leading Venezuela in a context of deep political and social divisions.
