This weekend was marked by an important announcement fromEric Barone (ConcernedApe), the talented developer of the famous life simulator and RPG Stardew Valley. It concerned a brand new game, which was therefore announced for the first time: ConcernedApe’s Haunted Chocolatier. It is an RPG and simulation game in the same vein as Stardew Valley, but with a particularly different feel. The creator explains it himself: in Stardew Valley the goal of the game was mostly land, nature and social, but in Haunted Chocolatier he wants to explore more “fantastic” possibilities, with experiences that will take us beyond the ordinary. The title of the game takes on its full meaning, since themes related to magic, chocolate and ghosts will be more than present. We already get a glimpse of all of this in the very first gameplay video for the project:
ConcernedApe says he hasn’t given much thought to the idea of chocolate and is not sure how it came to him. He thinks that sometimes the best ideas are the ones that come to us in a flash, instead of being intelligently thought out. He likes to work like that and for him, the important thing is the execution. After 10 years of practice, he feels more confident than ever to bring one of his ideas to life. And then (practically) everyone likes chocolate anyway. This food represents what is delicious, the haunted castle represents the lure of the unknown, and ghosts represent the imprint of the past. All of these things are important according to the developer.
However, don’t think that, because Haunted Chocolatier stages ghosts in a haunted castle, it is bound to be an evil game filled with negativity.. On the contrary, the creator has all the intentions so that his new creation is at the same time positive, pleasing and rewarding for everyone. It also indicates that Stardew Valley mainly channels energy from the sun, while for Haunted Chocolatier, it will be that of the moon. The two games will therefore be very different, but these two energies are vital.
But for ConcernedApe, the most important thing for him is to just make the game fun. He’s not quite sure how to best describe it, especially since Haunted Chocolatier will evolve organically as it continues to develop, so he’s not sure exactly where it will all go. Basically, the progress of the game will be as follows: gather ingredients, make chocolate and run a chocolate factory. Of course, there’s a lot more to it, but he doesn’t want to go into too much detail at this point, as he doesn’t want Haunted Chocolatier tied to a particular concept.
So far he has had a great time working on the game. There are a lot of possibilities for him, whereas with Stardew Valley he ended up feeling a bit limited as he was working within an established tradition.. He doesn’t regret it at all, but there was always a part of him that wanted to “go wild”. Haunted Chocolatier is a good opportunity for this, although he has not yet touched on the right things about it. For now, he’s comparing the state of the project to meat and potatoes, so there’s still a lot to do to establish a full meal, since what for him, what really brings a game to life, is is the spice or the sauce. He hasn’t really got there yet.
In any case, he has a very broad point of view on the project. However, while the first video he made may make the title feel like it is at an advanced stage of development, there is still a ton of things to do. In addition, with the way he works, he tends to chain things only at the last moments. He’s often used to working in such a way that it’s easy to create a video that makes the project look like a game that’s almost done, but he does insist that he has plenty of work left. content to work on. So it will take a long time to try Haunted Chocolatier for the first time, and he says he will work on it as much as he can.
On the official site, in addition to the first message from ConcernedApe, we can see the first images (gathered at the end of the article in the gallery with screenshots of the gameplay video) and other details which can be found in a frequently asked question . No more details for the moment on the goal of the game, except thatwe will play as a chocolatier (obviously very customizable and who can have relationships with different characters, including lovers) qui will live in a haunted castle. In order to thrive there, you will need to collect rare ingredients, make chocolates and sell them in a chocolate factory..
Haunted Chocolatier is fully developed by ConcernedApe, which is therefore on its own. He has no plans to involve other people in the development at this time, but when it’s done, he says he will most likely need help with portages and locations. Nevertheless, he will self-edit the game from anywhere. Regarding the release date, he can not yet reveal one for the moment, since the project is not yet advanced enough. He wants to be able to work on it in peace without having the pressure to respect above all a release date or even a simple release period.
The creator cannot yet reveal whether Haunted Chocolatier will be set in the same world as Stardew Valley. Regarding the gameplay, some elements will be similar to those of Stardew Valley, but others not. Haunted Chocolatier is another ‘city game’, where thewe will move to a new city and try a whole new way of life. It will be necessary get to know the people of the city, achieve goals and progress in different ways. This is all similar to Stardew Valley, but the base gameplay and theme are quite different. Haunted Chocolatier is more action-oriented, and the chocolate factory is the focal point of our efforts instead of the farm.
Haunted Chocolatier is in development for over a year, ConcernedApe having started working on it in 2020. He is currently working on the project mainly in the evenings and weekends. Before, he couldn’t move forward as often, as he was actively working on stuff related to Stardew Valley. ConcernedApe also reveals something quite interesting: Haunted Chocolatier isn’t the first or only “new project” he’s working on, but it’s the one he thinks he’ll complete first..
The title is intended to be playable only solo and currently, ConcernedApe does not provide for multiplayer. In terms of supports, the PC is 100% confirmed for the moment, but it also has the firm intention of releasing it on “other major platforms”. The Nintendo Switch, or a future Nintendo console, will therefore most certainly be confirmed.
Finally, as far as languages are concerned, English is the only one that can be confirmed at the moment. Nevertheless, ConcernedApe also wants Haunted Chocolatier to be localized into other languages. The project is not sufficiently advanced, he is not yet close to doing so, and he therefore does not want to put the cart before the horse. Since Stardew Valley was fully localized in French after a few years, we can also expect this to be the case for Haunted Chocolatier, but perhaps not at launch.
