The Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) is gearing up for its 2026 edition, promising a vibrant mix of performances, immersive experiences, and free community events. Running from May 15 to 30, the festival, under the direction of Chong Tze Chien, will embrace the theme of “Let’s Play!”, offering a diverse program designed to engage audiences of all ages. Early bird tickets, with a 20% discount, go on sale March 12th at 4pm via the festival’s official website, and select programs will be available for purchase using the SG Culture Pass.
This year’s festival will feature a particularly strong showing of innovative and accessible performances, including several free events designed to draw audiences into the heart of the arts. From large-scale theatrical productions to intimate installations, SIFA 2026 aims to create a dynamic and inclusive cultural experience. The festival village at Empress Lawn will be a central hub, offering late-night programming and a lively atmosphere reminiscent of the festival’s earlier iterations.
Soaring Heights: “Noli Timere” Takes to the Skies
One of the most anticipated events is “Noli Timere,” Latin for “be not afraid,” an aerial performance that blends contemporary dance, circus artistry, and cutting-edge engineering. The performance features eight performers navigating a large net sculpture suspended almost 8 meters (approximately 26 feet) above the ground. Performances are scheduled for May 22 (6:30pm, 8:30pm), May 23 (5:30pm, 7:30pm), May 24 (5:00pm, 7:30pm), May 28-29 (6:30pm, 8:30pm), and May 30 (5:30pm, 7:30pm). Notably, admission to “Noli Timere” is free, making it an accessible spectacle for all.
The performance will accept place at Nexus, a large, naturally ventilated, and sheltered open space located within the Punggol Digital District (Punggol Coast). Nexus is designed to be a central gathering point within the district, and its selection as a venue underscores SIFA’s commitment to bringing the arts to new and developing areas of Singapore. The Punggol Digital District is envisioned as a hub for technology and innovation, and the integration of artistic performances like “Noli Timere” aims to foster a vibrant and creative community. A Theatrical Procession and Immersive Experiences
Alongside “Noli Timere,” SIFA 2026 will as well present “A Light Between Rains,” described as a speculative theatrical procession combining community workshops, performances, and installations. Dates for this event are May 22 (5:15pm), May 23 (6:15pm), May 29 (5:15pm), and May 30 (6:15pm), also at Nexus in Punggol Coast. Like “Noli Timere,” “A Light Between Rains” is a free event.
The festival will also feature “Festival House,” offering immersive, family-friendly performances, workshops, free film screenings, and talks throughout the month of May. Details about specific events within “Festival House” are forthcoming, but the pillar promises a diverse range of activities catering to a broad audience.
Veteran singer Jacintha Abisheganaden and Dick Lee will also be collaborating on a biographical performance, Lush Life, directed by Ong Keng Sen. This is just one of twelve festival commissions for 2026.
SIFA 2026 is poised to be a landmark event in Singapore’s cultural calendar, offering a compelling blend of artistic innovation, community engagement, and free accessibility. With a focus on playful exploration and a diverse program of events, the festival promises a memorable experience for audiences of all backgrounds.
As Chong Tze Chien begins his three-year tenure as festival director, SIFA 2026 marks the start of an exciting new chapter for the Singapore International Festival of Arts. The festival’s commitment to both established and emerging artists, coupled with its dedication to creating a vibrant and inclusive cultural landscape, positions it as a key driver of artistic expression in Singapore and beyond.
