Norwegian Tech Firm Disrupts Market, Gains Global Share

by Sophie Lin - Technology Editor

Kristiansand, Norway – A burgeoning technology company based at Lumber Teknopark is rapidly gaining traction in the global market, challenging established players with innovative solutions. The firm, whereas remaining relatively low-profile, is experiencing significant growth and attracting attention within the energy and offshore wind sectors. This development underscores the growing importance of Kristiansand as a national center for competence in these fields.

Lumber Teknopark, located just outside Kristiansand city center, is quickly becoming a hub for technology and energy companies. The park’s development, spearheaded by Skeiegruppen, includes over 9,000 square meters of completed building space, currently occupied by major companies like Monter, Elkem Carbon, and Rec Solar. With a further 50,000 square meters of land available for construction, the park is poised to accommodate further expansion and solidify Kristiansand’s position in the burgeoning offshore wind industry, according to Lumber’s official website.

A Regional Collaboration Driving Innovation

The success of this tech firm is intertwined with a broader regional effort. Kristiansand is collaborating with neighboring municipalities – Mandal, Lyngdal, and Farsund – leveraging their deep-water ports and strong maritime traditions to create a powerful technological ecosystem. This collaborative approach aims to foster innovation and attract investment in the offshore wind sector. The region boasts a long history of expertise in offshore technology, with nearly 90% of global offshore drilling equipment originating from the Agder region, thanks to pioneers like Bjarne Skeie, who began developing equipment for the oil and gas industry in the 1970s. Skeie Technology AS, now the largest owner of Nekkar AS, is relocating to Lumber Teknopark in 2023, further strengthening the cluster.

Sustainable Building Practices at Lumber Teknopark

The Lumber Teknopark itself is a testament to sustainable building practices. Recent construction, including the award-winning Lumber 4 and the upcoming Lumber 5, prioritizes environmentally friendly materials and construction techniques. Lumber 4 was recognized as the World’s Best Office Building in its category, and Lumber 5, currently under construction, is a mass timber building being built by Veidekke AS in collaboration with Bravida, who secured a 49 million NOK contract (including VAT) for all technical installations, as reported by Avisen Kristiansand. The utilize of mass timber, including limetree support systems and mass timber floor slabs, reflects a commitment to circular and sustainable material use, as highlighted by Splitkon, who supplied 450 cubic meters of mass timber and 291 cubic meters of limetree for the project.

Vinde360: A Modern Hub for Knowledge Sharing

Further bolstering the region’s commitment to the energy and offshore wind sectors is the planned Vinde360 center, too located within Lumber Teknopark. According to Skeiegruppen, Vinde360 will serve as a central hub for knowledge sharing and collaboration within the Agder region. This initiative aims to facilitate the exchange of expertise and drive further innovation in the energy and offshore wind industries.

The rapid development of Lumber Teknopark and the success of the emerging tech firm demonstrate the potential for Kristiansand to become a leading force in the global energy and offshore wind markets. The combination of strategic location, regional collaboration, sustainable building practices, and a commitment to innovation positions the area for continued growth and success.

Looking ahead, the completion of Lumber 5 in the summer of 2026 will be a key milestone, providing additional space for technology companies and further solidifying the region’s position as a center of excellence. The continued development of Vinde360 will also play a crucial role in fostering collaboration and driving innovation within the sector.
