NRL Highlights: Panthers vs Sharks – Round 2 (2026)

Penrith Panthers continued their strong start to the 2026 NRL Telstra Premiership season with a decisive 26-6 victory over the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Carrington Park in Bathurst on Saturday night, extending their dominance over the Sharks.

The Panthers, fresh off a 26-0 shutout of reigning premiers Brisbane in Round 1, controlled the match from the outset, building an 18-0 lead by halftime. According to reports, winger Tom Jenkins continued his impressive try-scoring form, adding two tries to his tally after likewise scoring a brace against the Broncos.

Nathan Cleary, the Panthers’ halfback, played a pivotal role in establishing the early advantage, executing a 40-20 kick in the fifth minute that led to the first try of the night, scored by winger Brian To’o. The Panthers’ completion rate and defensive pressure proved too much for the Sharks, who struggled with handling errors and flimsy tackles.

A controversial penalty call by referee Ashley Klein, awarding a penalty against Sharks centre Jesse Ramien for an early tackle, further aided the Panthers’ momentum. Blaize Talagi capitalized on the penalty, sending a long ball to Jenkins for a try.

Jenkins secured his second try shortly after halftime, extending the Panthers’ lead to an insurmountable 24-0. The Sharks managed to break their points drought in the 59th minute with a try from winger Sione Katoa, converted by Nicho Hynes, but the Panthers’ lead remained secure.

The win marked the Panthers’ 10th victory in their last 11 matches against the Sharks, according to match reports. Jenkins’ performance propelled him to the top of the NRL season try-scoring tally.

The match also held significance for Cronulla fullback Will Kennedy, who grew up in the NSW Central West and had over 20 friends and family in attendance at Carrington Park. Despite the Sharks’ loss, Kennedy expressed optimism about the team’s progress, noting the challenge of facing a strong Penrith side.

The Sharks, who had begun the season with a 50-10 win over the Titans, will now regroup before their next match. The Panthers will continue their campaign, aiming to maintain their impressive form.
