Comedian Nunung has revealed she was compelled to sell a number of her assets starting in 2019 to cover living expenses following her drug rehabilitation and the subsequent economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nunung’s challenges began in 2019 when she faced drug-related legal troubles. She explained, “I sell that asset, actually in 2019 when I was hit by a case (drug), it was 9 months I was rehab. There was no income and living on. I lived not (only) with my husband and with my child, there was a lot I had to live because of the backbone.” The comedian’s arrest occurred on July 19, 2019, along with her husband, july Jan Sambiran, for alleged methamphetamine abuse. The South Jakarta District Court sentenced them both on November 27, 2019, to 1.5 years, which they served in the form of rehabilitation at the Cibubur drug Dependency Hospital (RSKO) in East Jakarta.

COVID-19 Pandemic Adds to Financial Strain

After completing her rehabilitation, nunung faced further hardship with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.The health crisis brought widespread economic disruption, severely impacting the entertainment industry. Nunung stated, “Well, after rehab, hit (pandemi) covid, there is no job anymore. It’s not wrong if I sell assets that I have. Luckily I have assets I can sell for life, that’s all.”

Jakarta-Solo Travels for Medical Treatments

Adding to her financial burdens, Nunung requires frequent trips between Jakarta and Solo for ongoing medical treatments. She explained, “Continue because I have to control every month, all my doctors in Jakarta. There are all doctors in Jakarta, psychiatrist, stomach acid, all, so they have to go back and forth Jakarta-Solo.” These recurring medical needs contribute significantly to her expenses.

I had to sell some of my assets to cover living expenses because I wasn’t earning any income during that time.

Nunung: After rehab, I was optimistic about getting back to work, but then the pandemic hit. The entertainment industry took a massive blow, which meant no job opportunities for me. Selling some of my assets became a necessity to survive. It’s upsetting, but I’m lucky to have had something to sell to provide for my family.

Archyde: We understand that you frequently travel between Jakarta and Solo for medical treatments. How have these recurring expenses affected your financial situation?

Nunung: Yes, my medical needs require regular trips to Jakarta, which adds to my expenses. All my doctors – psychiatrists, specialists, etc. – are based there. It’s a necessary cost for my health, but it doesn’t make it easier on my finances.
