Nutrition Experts Ban Extreme Diets Amid Pandemic

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Chairman of the Indonesia Sport Nutrition Association (ISNA) Dr. Rita Ramayulis, DCN, MKes, said that he extreme diets when a pandemic is not recommended. The reason is, will cause a number of health problems in the body.

“Diet during a pandemic is allowed, just don’t be extreme. Diet by regulating foods that regulate the body’s immune system (properly),” said Rita, Wednesday (3/3).

Rita explained that doing an extreme or strict diet can disturb the acid-base balance, body metabolism, and malnutrition. The metabolic damage will occur in the inflammatory process in the body, and can weaken immunity.

Extreme diets may shave a few pounds from your body weight. But metabolism can also be affected.

“Doing an extreme diet is not recommended, because it could be that what is reduced is water, muscle mass and bone mass. During the weight loss process, what should be lost is fat,” he said.

Rita then shared a number of things that need to be considered for those who want to have a healthy diet during the pandemic.

The first is an energy deficit or calorie deficit for weight loss. The calories in food provide energy in the form of heat, so that the body can function properly, even when it is resting.

“Next is increasing the intake of high protein, low fat and balanced nutrition. Then, feed the body with foods containing zinc, vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene, and iron,” said Rita.

The five substances mentioned above are substances that have antioxidant properties that the body needs to fight the effects of exposure to free radicals. Free radicals can damage the DNA structure of cells, increase levels of bad cholesterol in the body, cause inflammation, and weaken the immune system.

Meanwhile, for things to avoid, the first is food or drinks that are too sweet. Foods high in sugar lead to nutritional imbalances because you will prefer foods that are high in glucose than foods that contain vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber. In addition, consuming excess sugar can also suppress the immune system.
