NYC Pokémon Card Store Robbed – Poké Court Heist

Novel York City’s Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) community is reeling after a brazen robbery at The Poké Court, a popular card shop. The incident, which occurred recently, saw thieves make off with over $100,000 worth of Pokémon cards and merchandise, according to reports.

The Poké Court has quickly develop into a central hub for collectors and enthusiasts in the city, known for its curated selection of English and Japanese cards, as well as trainer supplies. The store, which also has a physical location in New York City, has gained significant traction, particularly with the announcement of a new 2,000-square-foot flagship store in Chelsea scheduled to open this November. This latest event casts a shadow over the excitement surrounding the expansion.

Details surrounding the robbery are still emerging, but the incident has prompted a response from Nintendo, who have requested that The Poké Court change its name. This request, as reported by Polygon, comes after the store was targeted at gunpoint. The exact reasons behind Nintendo’s request haven’t been fully disclosed, but it appears to be related to the security concerns following the robbery.

The Poké Court’s Rise and Upcoming Flagship Store

What began as a side hustle in late 2023 has rapidly grown into one of New York City’s most sought-after destinations for Pokémon TCG collectors. A pop-up shop in SoHo last year drew over 4,000 visitors in just three days, demonstrating the strong demand for the store’s offerings. The new flagship location in the Meatpacking District, designed by GAMPworks, promises a significantly enhanced experience for fans.

The expanded space will feature dedicated areas like a “Pack Bar,” where a “Packtender” will assist customers in selecting and opening new products, and a “Ripping Corner” equipped with penny sleeves to protect valuable pulls. Walls of single cards, graded slabs, and merchandise, including exclusive Poké Court-branded items, are also planned. A VIP Lounge will provide a space for collectors and content creators to host events and parties.

Grand Opening Plans and Community Impact

The grand opening weekend, scheduled for November 1–2, is planned as a large-scale event in collaboration with sponsor Collectr. Activities will include live streams of vintage box breaks, such as an original 1999 Base Set, giveaways, and special-edition patches for early visitors. A claw machine filled with rare packs and merchandise, courtesy of Partea, will also be featured.

The Poké Court offers a wide range of Pokémon TCG products, including cards from the latest sets like Phantasmal Flames (English) and Nullifying Zero (Japanese), as well as older sets like Scarlet & Violet and Sword & Shield. They also sell booster boxes, blister packs, promo cards, and accessories such as binders, deck boxes, and card protectors. The store also provides card buying and trade-in services, as well as PSA submission assistance.

Looking Ahead

The robbery at The Poké Court is a stark reminder of the risks faced by businesses, even those catering to a seemingly niche hobby. While the store is navigating the challenges presented by this incident, including a requested name change, the planned opening of the new flagship store signals a continued commitment to serving the Pokémon TCG community in New York City. The store’s ability to adapt and rebuild will be closely watched by collectors and fans alike.
