An 18-year-old girl, nicknamed Xiaoyu, from Sichuan province, located in southwest China, became so obsessed with her boyfriend that it seriously affected her mental health until she was diagnosed with ‘love brain’, reports the South China Morning Post. .

According to Dr. Du Na of Chengdu Fourth People’s Hospital, Xiaoyu’s worrying behavior began in her first year of university, when she became intimate with her boyfriend.

Xiaoyu quickly became very dependent on her partner and needed to be by his side all the time, demanding that he constantly know her whereregardings and respond to her messages instantly, regardless of the time, which made her boyfriend feel uncomfortable and suffocated.

On one occasion, the young woman called her boyfriend more than 100 times, but he did not answer her, making Xiaoyu so angry that she began throwing and destroying household objects throughout her house.

The boyfriend called the police, who arrived at the scene just as Xiaoyu threatened to jump off a balcony.

The young woman was taken to a hospital, where she was eventually diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD), known colloquially in China as ‘love brain’, which is characterized by emotional instability, impulsivity and chaotic interpersonal relationships.

According to Du, this disorder can coexist with other mental conditions such as anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder.

Although the doctor did not reveal the causes of Xiaoyu’s illness, she assured that it usually occurs in people who have not had healthy relationships with their parents during childhood.
