Now aged 82, singer and host Serge Laprade has decided to live his life out in the open.
He got married last week to Daniel Arseneault, his lover of the last 50 years.
For decades, he introduced him as his friend and his manager.
“I have two lives. Daniel kept silent, in the sense that he preferred to be in the shade and let me take the lead and not mix it up,” explains Serge Laprade.
For many years, their family was unaware of their relationship.
“In my family, it would not have happened,” said Mr. Laprade.
For him, the public and his career were more important.
“I had a huge female audience. If it harms my career, it’s my job, I don’t want that,” he recalls.
He explains that he was waiting for society to change. After years of living out of sight, Daniel and Serge got married last week.
They want to send a message to young people.
“I think of all the young people today who are not listened to by their parents, their friends, who are looking for themselves. Our goal was just to say that it is possible for two people to meet, who experience happiness, and who are not a heterosexual couple,” the newlyweds explain together.
