On World Fight against Prostate Cancer, a call to awareness and prevention

Cartagena de Indias Launches Campaign for Early Detection of Prostate Cancer

Cartagena de Indias, DT and C., June 11, 2025 – In a significant move to combat one of the leading causes of death in men over 50, the District Administrative Department of Health (Dadis) is urging the male population to adopt a culture of early prevention and detection of prostate cancer. The call to action comes as part of the commemoration of World Day for the Fight against Prostate Cancer.

Key Facts and Figures

Prostate cancer remains a critical health concern, particularly for men between 55 and 70 years old. According to recent data, the mortality rate in Cartagena has seen a slight increase from 17.3 deaths per 100,000 men in 2020 to 18.4 per 100,000 in 2024. This figure is notably higher than the averages reported in the Bolivar department and across Colombia, which stand at 16.0 and 14.0 deaths per 100,000 men, respectively.

In 2024 alone, the city reported 288 new cases of prostate cancer, translating to an incidence rate of 56.4 cases per 100,000 men, up from 47.7 cases per 100,000 in the previous year. The primary risk factors include age and a family history of prostate cancer.

Symptoms and Detection

Early detection is crucial for effective treatment and improved outcomes. Common symptoms of prostate cancer include delayed urination, difficulty urinating, decreased urinary flow, increased urinary frequency, weight loss, erectile dysfunction, and pain in various parts of the body.

Timely detection methods such as the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test and rectal exams from the age of 50 are essential. The Dadis recommends regular preventive medical check-ups for men over 40, especially those with a family history of the disease.

Expert Insights and Recommendations

“Leading a healthy lifestyle can significantly improve overall health and facilitate early detection,” said Rafael Navarro Spain, Director of Dadis. “While prostate cancer is not directly linked to unhealthy habits like smoking, obesity, or alcoholism, adopting a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding harmful substances is always beneficial.”

Navarro emphasized the importance of consulting a doctor at the first sign of symptoms and undergoing necessary diagnostic tests, including prostatic tissue biopsies and advanced imaging techniques like magnetic resonance fused with ultrasound.

Diagnosis and Treatment Options

The diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer should be performed by a specialist urologist. Treatment options include surgical intervention, radiotherapy, cryotherapy, hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, along with periodic monitoring of PSA levels.

Call to Action

The Dadis urges all men in Cartagena to prioritize their health and actively participate in prevention campaigns. Early diagnosis can lead to less invasive treatments and better chances of success. By staying informed and proactive, men can take control of their health and contribute to reducing the impact of prostate cancer in their communities.
