Also: Merkatz film double with “Drei Herren” and “Ene mene muh … and you’re dead!” And “Kultur Heute Spezial”; National Council meeting live
Vienna (OTS) – ORF III Kultur und Information will show a six-part television evening in honor of the cult actor on Friday, November 20, 2020, at the start of the big Merkatz weekend. As a highlight of the evening, ORF III presents the new birthday portrait “Karl Merkatz: Talking about life” by Tommy Schmidle.
During the day, “Politics live” will broadcast the fourth and last day of the National Council’s session of this intensive plenary week from 9:05 am, when bills off the budget are on the agenda. This involves, for example, the introduction of ethics lessons as an alternative compulsory subject in the upper level, the creation of a legal entitlement to special care time and the extension of special corona regulations for people in partial retirement. The meeting will be broadcast in full on ORF III and commented by Vera Schmidt and Anna Stahleder. At the same time, Fritz Jungmayr will guide the broadcast on ORF 2 from 9:05 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The main evening is fully dedicated to the actor Karl Merkatz, who is celebrating his 90th birthday this month. A special edition of “Culture Today” starts the program at 7.45 p.m. This is followed by the ORF III new production “Karl Merkatz: Talking About Life” (8:15 pm), in which the film designer Tommy Schmidle and the artist in the legendary Salzburg Café Bazar look back on his impressive career. In doing so, Merkatz comments on archival excerpts from his numerous roles, some of which have barely been shown, and gives cheerful, but also thoughtful insights into his private and professional life.
After that, two productions with Merkatz are waiting under the title “Der Österreichische Film”: At 9:05 p.m. he embodies three lovable and harmless inmates of an insane asylum in Nikolaus Leytner’s “Drei Herren” (9:05 p.m.) from 1998, together with Karl Markovics and Ottfried Fischer . By a fateful coincidence, they escape the walls and henceforth cause unrest in the Waldviertel society. At 10:35 p.m., Houchang Allahyari’s black crime comedy “Ene mene muh … and you’re dead!”, Published in 2001, tells of intrigues and murders in an old people’s home on the outskirts of Vienna. In addition to Merkatz, other roles include Bibiana Zeller, Waltraut Haas, Reinhard Nowak and Kurt Sobotka.
At the end of the evening, ORF III will show two episodes of the ten-part musical production “Aufg’spiel wird … in Joschis Beisl” (from 0.05 am) with Karl Merkatz as the host.
