Ostend New Year’s Plunge Tradition: 4,000 Brave the Cold for the Polar Bear Dip

Some 4,000 people braved the cold – and 10 degree water – to take part in the traditional New Year’s plunge in Ostend on Saturday followingnoon. This is 1,000 more participants than last year.

Since its first edition in 1987, the Ostend New Year’s Plunge has gradually become a true tradition on the first Saturday of the year.

After the kick-off given by Mayor Bart Tommelein (Open VLD), the multi-colored crowd ran towards the North Sea to take a dip. “With four thousand ‘polar bears’ we greet the New Year in a fun way, where young and old give the best of themselves“, declared the mayor.

Despite the gloomy weather, the city of Ostend can also rejoice in having had a successful Christmas holiday. Compared to 2023, the number of nights has notably increased by 9%.
