Three people have died and 71 others have been hospitalized in the city of Rzeszow, in southeastern Poland, following being infected with Legionella bacteria, a medical source told AFP on Wednesday.
“Three people have died of legionnaires’ disease,” Andrzej Sroka, a spokesman for the University Hospital in Rzeszow, told AFP, noting that the deceased were “elderly”.
For its part, the local health authorities said in a statement that a total of 71 people were taken to hospital following being infected with this bacteria, which causes serious problems in the respiratory system.
The source of their infection with this bacteria was not known.
The municipality of Rzeszow has set up a crisis cell to deal with this health emergency.
The municipality announced that at the end of the week it would carry out an additional disinfection of the city’s water supply network.
On Monday, the authorities will announce the results of tests of water samples taken from the various springs that supply the city with water.
Legionnaires’ disease is a dangerous pulmonary infection caused by bacteria that infect the human respiratory system and transmit it either through drinking contaminated water or through inhalation through air conditioner.
