Paddington & Into the Woods Lead 2025 Olivier Award Nominations

London’s West Conclude is bracing for a marmalade-filled showdown, as both Paddington: The Musical and a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods received a leading 11 nominations each for the 2026 Olivier Awards. The nominations, announced Thursday, highlight a vibrant season for musical theatre, with both productions garnering recognition across a wide range of categories. The awards, celebrating their 50th anniversary, will be presented on April 12 at the Royal Albert Hall, hosted by actor Nick Mohammed.

Paddington, which opened to five-star reviews at the Savoy Theatre, is nominated for Best Recent Musical, alongside Here We Are and Shucked. The production’s success is also reflected in its director, Luke Sheppard, receiving a nomination for the Sir Peter Hall Award for Best Director. The innovative staging of the beloved children’s book character, utilizing both a voice actor and a performer in costume, has clearly resonated with critics and voters alike.

The dual performance of Paddington Bear, voiced by James Hameed and physically embodied by Arti Shah, has earned both actors a joint nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. Supporting cast members Tom Edden, Amy Booth-Steel and Victoria Hamilton-Barritt also received nominations for their performances. Beyond the acting accolades, the production is also recognized for its technical achievements, including Gabriella Slade’s costumes, Tahra Zafar’s puppet designs, Tom Pye’s set, Ash J Woodward’s video design, Gareth Owen’s sound, and Matt Brind’s orchestrations and arrangements.

Into the Woods, staged at the Bridge Theatre, is competing for Best Musical Revival. The production also earned Jordan Fein a nomination for Best Director, and Jamie Parker and Katie Brayben are both nominated for Best Actor and Actress in a Musical, respectively. Supporting performances by Jo Foster, Oliver Savile, and Kate Fleetwood also received recognition. The production’s technical elements – Adam Fisher’s sound, Aideen Malone’s lighting, Roland Horvath’s video, and Tom Scutt’s set and costume designs – were also acknowledged with nominations.

Other Notable Nominations

Stephen Sondheim’s musical legacy is further celebrated with a nomination for his final operate, Here We Are, staged at the National Theatre. Jane Krakowski and Tracie Bennett, stars of Here We Are, also received acting nominations. Rachel Zegler, lauded for her performance in Evita, including singing from the Palladium’s balcony, is nominated for Best Actress in a Musical, alongside Brayben and Krakowski.

The play categories are also highly competitive, with All My Sons, Kenrex, and Stereophonic each receiving six nominations. Tom Hiddleston, currently captivating audiences in Much Ado About Nothing, is nominated for Best Actor, alongside Bryan Cranston (All My Sons), Sean Hayes (Good Night, Oscar), Jack Holden (Kenrex), and David Shields (Punch). Notably, Hiddleston’s co-star Hayley Atwell was not nominated, nor was Jamie Lloyd, the director of both Evita and Much Ado About Nothing.

The Society of London Theatre oversees the Olivier Awards, with winners selected by a panel of industry figures and theatre enthusiasts. The ceremony promises to be a celebration of the best in British theatre, recognizing both established stars and emerging talent.

Beyond the major awards, several other productions received recognition, including The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, Arcadia, and The Seagull. Arcade Fire’s Will Butler and Justin Craig are nominated for Outstanding Musical Contribution for their work on Stereophonic.
