## Interview: Pakistan and Tajikistan Forge Closer Ties
**Host:** Welcome back to the show. Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shahbaz Sharif, recently wrapped up a two-day visit to Tajikistan. Joining us now to discuss the outcomes of this important diplomatic trip is Dr. Anya Petrov, an expert on Central Asian politics and economics. Welcome, Dr. Petrov.
**Dr. Petrov:** Thank you for having me.
**Host:** Let’s dive right in. Prime Minister Sharif described the visit as a success, highlighting the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding and a strategic partnership agreement. What do these agreements signify for the relationship between Pakistan and Tajikistan?
**Dr. Petrov:** This visit clearly signals a desire on both sides to deepen their economic and security cooperation. This aligns with broader trends we’re seeing in the region, such as the increasing importance of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation [1](https://www.specialeurasia.com/2024/09/16/tajikistan-pakistan-trade/) and the convergence of interests regarding infrastructure projects like the Belt and Road Initiative.
**Host:** Prime Minister Sharif also emphasised trade, mentioning the transportation of goods from Karachi port to Tajikistan and Afghanistan. How significant is this trade route in the context of regional connectivity?
**Dr. Petrov:** This route is incredibly important for both Tajikistan and Pakistan, offering a more direct way to access markets in South Asia and Central Asia. It can also contribute to the growth of regional trade through organisations like the Eurasian Economic Union [1](https://www.specialeurasia.com/2024/09/16/tajikistan-pakistan-trade/).
**Host:** how could this strengthened partnership between Pakistan and Tajikistan potentially impact the geopolitical landscape of the region?
**Dr. Petrov:** It remains to be seen what the long-term consequences will be, but this partnership has the potential to stabilize the region by fostering greater economic interdependence. It could also lead to increased cooperation on security issues, especially given shared concerns about extremism and instability in Afghanistan.
**Host:** Thank you, Dr. Petrov, for your insightful analysis.
