Houses of many gentlemen: beauty on the banks of the Danube: Palais Augarten

Of one of the most beautiful palaces in the heart of Vienna, many only know the park that belongs to it: the Palais Augarten, today the seat of the Vienna Boys’ Choir and the porcelain factory of the same name. It looks back on a history that lasts almost as long as that of the Augarten, which Maria Theresa’s father, Charles VI, had laid out. The palace fell to the imperial family under Maria Theresa’s son Joseph II. Until the end of the monarchy, it was the scene of major festivals and encounters, including the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873, when Franz Joseph received his Russian colleague Tsar Alexander II here.
