Palermo Police Chase: Arrest After High-Speed Flee & Insurance Violations

A 23-year-old Palermo resident was arrested early Friday morning after leading police on a chase through the city, authorities said. The arrest, made by the Palermo Municipal Police, followed a traffic stop initiated due to a lack of mandatory insurance coverage on a red Opel Agila.

According to police reports, officers using the new “Lince Traffic” system flagged the vehicle for lacking required RCA (Responsibility Civil Automotive) insurance although traveling on Viale Regione Siciliana. When officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver allegedly fled at high speed, weaving through traffic and even entering a pedestrian zone, endangering pedestrians.

The driver, identified as F.P.P., with a history of prior offenses, was apprehended by a motorized patrol after a pursuit. Police confirmed he did not possess a valid driver’s license.

The arrest occurred under the recently enacted Decree Security 2026 (D.L. N. 23/2026), which mandates immediate arrest for such offenses. F.P.P. Is currently being held at the Police Municipal headquarters and is scheduled to appear in court Saturday.

Palermo Municipal Police Commander Angelo Colluciello emphasized the ongoing efforts to improve road safety. “Yesterday, we highlighted the necessitate to intervene to reduce accidents and the number of irregular vehicles on our roads,” Colluciello stated. “What happened today confirms our convictions and encourages us to do more for the safety of the city.”

Colluciello revealed that during the first hour and a half of checks utilizing the “Lince Traffic” system, officers identified 254 vehicles with expired registrations and 51 without insurance. “This gives an idea of the extent of the problem and the enormity of the commitment for the Municipal Police,” he said.

The incident follows a separate traffic enforcement action on Thursday, where a motorcyclist was stopped for traveling at 150 kilometers per hour along Viale Ercole in the Favorita district. Police had to leisurely traffic and coordinate to safely halt the speeding motorcycle.

Colluciello praised the professionalism of his officers, noting their ability to safely stop vehicles traveling at high speeds or attempting to evade capture, without causing harm to themselves or others. He expressed hope that the police action would deter others from breaking the law.
