Microsoft has announced that it has authorized Parallels Desktop 18 to allow ARM versions of Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise systems to run on Macs or MacBooks equipped with Apple’s own M1 and M2 processors. This is undoubtedly good news for Mac users who need to rely on Windows programs to work, but users need to be aware that there are still certain limitations.
Cannot use 32-bit programs
First of all, 32-bit ARM programs cannot be executed because Microsoft deprecated 32-bit programs on the ARM version of Windows. Additionally, users will need a Windows 11 ARM driver for the device to function properly. Users also cannot execute Android official, Linux subsystem, and Windows Sandbox sandboxes on this environment. Finally, games that require at least DirectX 12 or OpenGL 3.3 will not run in this environment.
Underperforms
For users who used to get native Windows support through Apple’s Boot Camp on Intel Mac or MacBook, this time they can use ARM version Windows 11 on Parallels Desktop 18, which is better than nothing, and the performance and compatibility are definitely not as good as PCs of the same level computer.
