Bratislava – Slovak biathlete Paulína Bátovská Fialková has announced her retirement from professional sports at the end of the current season. The 33-year-old, widely considered one of the most successful female biathletes in Slovak history, shared the news in a video posted on the Slovak Biathlon website. Her decision brings an end to a celebrated career marked by consistent performance and dedication to the sport.
Bátovská Fialková’s announcement comes as the biathlon world transitions following the Olympic season. She plans to complete the remainder of the current season, including three World Cup events, before officially retiring at the mass start competition on March 22nd in Holmenkollen, Norway. “Biathlon has shaped me from my first childhood training to podiums in the World Cup,” she stated in the video. “In my career, I have experienced almost everything: a baptism of fire, gradual progress to the highest biathlon elite, a hard fall to the bottom, burnout, frustration, but also rediscovering strength and motivation, sacrifice to complete exhaustion. Biathlon taught me that nothing is forever.”
The athlete expressed gratitude to her family, coaches, team, sponsors, and fans for their unwavering support throughout her career. “Thank you to my family, coaches and the entire team, sponsors, fans, for always being there for me, even when it wasn’t easy,” she added. “One huge chapter of my life is slowly closing, but I still have the last three rounds of the World Cup ahead of me, and I want to enjoy these moments with you to the fullest.”
Bátovská Fialková debuted in the World Cup as a junior and steadily established herself among the elite. Her best results came in the 2018/2019 season, where she accumulated 793 points and finished sixth in the overall standings. Throughout her career, she reached the podium nine times and achieved a fifth-place finish at both the World Championships and the Olympic Games. She has amassed a total of 3,500 points in World Cup, World Championship, and Olympic competitions.
