Clinton, S.C. – The Presbyterian College Blue Hose lacrosse team will host Austin Peay State University this Sunday, marking a significant milestone as the Governors compete in just their second and third collegiate lacrosse games ever. The noon opening draw at Bailey Memorial Stadium will pit the Blue Hose (0-2) against the first-year Austin Peay program (1-0), which launched with a historic win earlier this month.
This contest is part of a three-game homestand for Presbyterian, and notably, each of their first three home opponents represents a first-time matchup for the Blue Hose. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+, offering fans a chance to witness the burgeoning rivalry between these two programs. Presbyterian College announced the matchup as part of a three-game stretch at home.
Austin Peay’s entry into the world of NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse is a recent development. The university announced the addition of the program in March 2024, capitalizing on the sport’s growing popularity. Melissa Rausch was named the inaugural head coach in June 2024, bringing with her four seasons of experience at Division II Colorado Springs.
A Historic Start for the Governors
The Governors made a splash in their inaugural game on February 7th, securing a 15-14 victory over Gardner-Webb in Clarksville, Tennessee. The team demonstrated resilience, overcoming a late rally from their opponents and controlling 26 draw controls throughout the game. Freshman Samantha Houttekier and UMBC transfer Lauryn Warfield led the offensive charge, each scoring four goals. The team also registered 23 shots on goal and saw four players record at least three ground balls. Clarksville Online reported on the historic win.
Rausch’s roster is a blend of experience and youth, comprised of 12 transfers – including players from Longwood and Gardner-Webb – and 18 true freshmen. The Governors continued their inaugural season with a game against Furman on Friday, February 20th, before traveling to Clinton to face Presbyterian.
Blue Hose Seek First Win
Presbyterian, meanwhile, is looking to bounce back from a close 11-8 defeat to Le Moyne in their home opener. Despite a 7-3 halftime deficit, the Blue Hose fought valiantly in a game played amidst a downpour at Bailey Stadium. Sophomore Kate Dominick led the team with two goals and two assists, while Kaylie Rittmueller and Eastern Michigan transfer Sydney Howard also contributed two goals apiece.
Senior Avery West has been a standout performer for Presbyterian, leading the Massive South Conference with six caused turnovers. Dominick’s five assists also top the league standings. Head coach Eric Clakeley’s team has scored eight goals in both of their 2026 matches, with six different players finding the back of the net at least once.
Live stats for the game will be available through Stat Broadcast. Fans can also watch the game live on ESPN+.
As Austin Peay navigates its first season, and Presbyterian seeks its first win, Sunday’s matchup promises to be a compelling contest between two programs with distinct storylines. The Governors’ continued development and the Blue Hose’s pursuit of a victory will be key storylines to watch as the non-conference schedule progresses.
